The Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center—LA BioMed—was asked by the County of Los Angeles to consolidate its facilities by 2014 to a 10.25-acre parcel within the 75-acre campus of Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. LA BioMed enlisted Jensen + Partners to envision a strong future for LA BioMed that would leverage the county’s mandate to replace LA BioMed’s barracks with new facilities to support the nationally renowned research that takes place on the campus.
The master plan proposes a modular approach to the design of new research environments that could adapt over time to a changing mix of clinical research, wet lab research, and dry/computational research. Proposed new facilities include three new four-story research buildings of 70,000 GSF each; a campus center featuring amenities such as indoor and outdoor dining, fitness, and conference facilities; and structured parking for staff and visitors. New landscaping throughout creates a sense of campus while offering inviting outdoor spaces throughout LA BioMed.
