UCLA Medical Center and Mattel Children's Hospital
$1.0 B / 1,200,000 GSF
Following the 1994 Northridge Earthquake, Sarah Jensen led the team that assessed the damage to the 3.1 million square foot Center for Health Sciences complex at UCLA. Jensen led the University’s negotiations with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and ultimately seeded the $1 billion replacement hospital project. Sarah Jensen and Thomas Yang oversaw the architectural team of I.M. Pei and Perkins + Will in the design phase of the 1.2 million square foot acute care facility. Francis Ridlehoover was the Chief Operating Officer of the hospital and served as the hospital’s principal-in-charge for the project.
The new structure encompasses eight stories above ground and a two-story below-grade parking structure component of approximately 160,000 GSF. The structure is one of the first in the state to meet the stringent new 2008 California seismic safety standards. The UCLA Replacement Hospital combines the operations of UCLA Medical Center, UCLA Neuropsychiatric Hospital and Mattel Children’s Hospital at UCLA. The hospital provides state-of-the-art acute care facilities, including 525 beds in single-bed universal use rooms, 63 observational beds, operating rooms, ancillary services, an emergency department/trauma center and information and technology systems required to meet tertiary/quaternary clinical care, teaching and clinical research requirements.
