University of California, Los Angeles Santa Monica Replacement Hospital

In 1995, Sarah Jensen worked on the UCLA team that managed the acquisition of Santa Monica Hospital. Following the acquisition, Jensen negotiated with FEMA for funding to replace the Santa Monica Hospital and later oversaw the design team of Robert A.M. Stern and Anshen + Allen (now CO Architects) in the planning and design of the new $300MM facility. In 1997, Jensen worked closely with Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital on the development of a strategic alliance between Orthopaedic Hospital and UCLA to move Orthopaedic Hospital’s inpatient services to Santa Monica while continuing to provide outpatient services at its Outpatient Clinic in downtown Los Angeles.

The project is comprised of three major parts: the new Central Plant, the Southwest Wing, which includes the new Emergency Center, and the Orthopaedic Hospital Facility. The new Central Plant that powers both the existing and replacement hospitals, and is not only seismically safer than its predecessor but more energy-efficient and reliable. The Southwest Wing houses a new 13,000 SF Emergency Center as well as inpatient units. The new Orthopaedic Hospital facility houses an inpatient clinic, the UCLA Department of Orthopaedics’ administrative and faculty offices, other administrative offices, a library, and a museum.
