Indiana University Health
Indiana University Health, partnered with Indiana School of Medicine, is a not-for-profit, academic medical health center and Indiana’s most comprehensive healthcare system. In 2014, Indiana University Health engaged Jensen + Partners to provide a strategic master plan for the South Central Region of Indiana. Located south of Indianapolis, the South Central Region is comprised of the combined markets in Bloomington, Morgan, Bedford and Paoli; each acute care hospital has been serving the local population’s healthcare needs since the 1950’s.
The goal of the Master Plan effort was to increase IU Health’s competitive advantage in the current market by validating relevant strategies and developing plans for future healthcare needs. In addition, the South Central Region had received a mandate to reduce facilities operating costs by 25% over five years.
The Jensen + Partners team provided analysis of facilities infrastructure and hospital operations requirements, as well as the long-term facilities strategy for the utilization of owned and leased buildings. Individual work streams included analyses of current utilization of hospital inpatient and outpatient services, space needs assessment and growth projections, phased program development and project phasing. Utilization of hospital inpatient and outpatient services was assessed, and programmatic needs and growth projections were identified to maximize departmental, operational and staffing efficiencies. Jensen + Partners made a long-term infrastructure strategy to increase IU Health’s competitive advantage in the market, as well as a capital forecast with phased program development and project sequencing.
The master planning process engaged about 150 stakeholders, including physicians, clinical and administrative staff, facility directors, Board members, capital planners, and community representatives. Special attention was paid to the physicians’ group, which consisted of physicians and staff who will be in the prime of their practices in the next ten years, and are considered the “future leaders” of IU Health’s South Central Region.
“Sarah, Frances, and their team provide a unique combination of skills that range from strategic healthcare planning and architecture through community and board relations. They bring clear thinking and straightforward communication and recommendations.”
